Why Puppies Need DHA

Boston Terrier puppies are undeniably adorable, with their tiny paws, short tails, and big, beautiful eyes. Did you know that these furry little cuties require a special nutrient called DHA to support their growth and development?

DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, is an omega-3 fatty acid that is essential for brain and vision development. It is found in high concentrations in fish oil, but can also be synthesized by the body from other omega-3 fatty acids.

In puppies, DHA is especially important during the first few months of life. This is because their brains and nervous systems are still developing, and DHA is a critical component of the cell membranes in these tissues. Studies have shown that puppies fed a diet high in DHA have better cognitive performance and are more trainable than those fed a diet low in DHA.

DHA also plays a role in the development of the retina, the part of the eye responsible for vision. Puppies fed a diet high in DHA have been shown to have better visual acuity and contrast sensitivity than those fed a diet low in DHA.

It's not just puppies that can benefit from DHA. Adult dogs also need this important nutrient to maintain brain function and cognitive health. In fact, some studies have suggested that DHA may help to reduce the risk of cognitive decline in aging dogs.

So, how can you make sure your Boston Terrier puppy is getting enough DHA? One option is to feed them a high-quality puppy food that is formulated to meet their specific nutritional needs. Look for a food that contains fish oil or another source of DHA, and be sure to follow the feeding recommendations on the package. We use Purina Pro Plan Puppy Small Breed Chicken & Rice Formula Dry Dog Food and you will receive a small bag in your Puppy Starter Kit. Before you pick up your puppy please make sure that you and your veterinarian have a picked a puppy food and that you have some both at home and enough for the trip home with your new puppy.

You can also supplement your puppy's diet with fish oil or other DHA supplements, but be sure to talk to your veterinarian before doing so. Too much of a good thing can be harmful, and your vet can help you determine the right dose for your puppy's age and size.

DHA is an essential nutrient that puppies need to support their growth and development. By feeding your puppy a diet that is high in DHA, you can help them to reach their full potential and set them up for a lifetime of good health.
