How to Puppy Proof Your House or Apartment

Puppies are curious and playful creatures, which can make them a handful when it comes to keeping them safe in your home. Puppy proofing your home is essential to prevent accidents and injuries as well as protect your belongings. Here are some tips to help you puppy proof your house.

Secure Hazardous Items

Ensure that all hazardous items are kept out of reach of your puppy. These include chemicals, cleaning supplies, medicines, sharp objects, and even small objects that can be swallowed. Keep them in cabinets, drawers or on high shelves.

Keep Electrical Cords Safe

Puppies are known to chew on electrical cords, which can cause electrocution or even a fire. Cover the cords with cord protectors or hide them behind furniture.

Lock Up Your Trash

Puppies are notorious for getting into the trash and eating things they shouldn't. Use a trash can with a secure lid or store it in a cabinet to keep your puppy from getting into it.

Close Doors and Gates

Close doors to rooms that are off-limits to your puppy to prevent them from getting into trouble. Use baby gates to keep them out of areas such as the kitchen or living room when you are not around.

Protect Your Furniture

Puppies love to chew on furniture, especially wooden legs. Use deterrent sprays or cover the legs with plastic or aluminum foil to keep your puppy from damaging your furniture.

Install Safety Gates

If you have stairs in your home, install safety gates to prevent your puppy from falling down the stairs. Make sure that the safety gates are secure and cannot be easily pushed over.

Keep Houseplants Out of Reach

Some houseplants can be toxic to puppies if ingested. Keep your plants out of reach or consider getting pet-friendly plants that are safe for your puppy to be around.

Puppy proofing your home is an ongoing process as puppies grow and learn new things. Keep an eye on your puppy and be prepared to make changes to your puppy proofing plan as necessary. With these tips, you can create a safe and secure environment for your furry friend to grow and thrive in.
