How To Keep Brachycephalic Dogs Cool During The Summer

Updated: Oct 8

Brachycephalic dogs, also known as flat-faced dogs, are becoming increasingly popular as pets. These dogs include breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers. Due to their unique physical features, they are more prone to overheating and heat exhaustion, especially during the summer months. As a responsible pet owner, it is important to take the necessary steps to keep your smoosh faced dog cool and comfortable during the hot weather. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

  1. Avoid exercising your dog during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, try to exercise them during the early morning or late evening when the temperature is cooler. When you exercise them stay close to home.

  2. Provide plenty of fresh water for your dog to drink. Make sure you refill their water bowl regularly and consider adding ice cubes to the water to help keep it cool.

  3. Provide shade for your dog. Whether it be under a tree or a covered area, make sure your dog has access to a shaded area where they can relax and cool down. If you do need to go out in the warmer parts of the day, stay in the shade as much as possible.

  4. Use cooling mats or vests. These are specially designed products that can help keep your dog cool during hot weather. Simply place the mat in the fridge or freezer before use, or soak the vest in cold water.

  5. Do not leave your dog in the car. Even with the windows down, the temperature inside a car can quickly rise to dangerous levels, causing heat exhaustion or even death.

  6. Be mindful of asphalt in the summer because when it's 77 degrees F pavement in the sunshine can feel like 125 degrees F or even hotter! Dog booties or paw wax are some options or sometimes you might be better off leaving your dog at home. Last year we went to a festival in Georgia and there were dog owners letting their dogs walk on the hot asphalt. I bet they felt horrible when they got home and realized that they burned their dogs' paw pads.

  7. If you have air conditioning, keep it on during hot weather to help keep your dog cool and comfortable. If your home does not have air conditioning then purchase portable air conditioning units and fans to make sure that your dog can stay comfortable.

By following these tips, you can help keep your smooshy faced dog cool and comfortable during the summer months. Remember, it is important to always monitor your dog for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, such as excessive panting, excessive thirst, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, bright red tongue and pale gums, body temperature above 103 degrees and lethargy. If you suspect your dog is overheating, seek veterinary attention immediately.
