How To Get Dog Smells Out Of Your House

As much as we love our Boston Terriers, they can sometimes leave unpleasant odors in our homes. While we might not be able to stop their famous farts we can cut down on wet dog smells, potty accidents, or just general pet odors. Dog smells vary based on various factors, including breed, age, type of fur, health and medical conditions, amount of drool, outdoor activity and, perhaps most important, bathing schedule. Here are some tips to help you get dog smells out of your house.

Make Sure Your Dog Is Healthy

Some smells can come from yeast infections and other ailments to make sure that you are regularly checking on your dogs health and consult with your veterinarian if you see something questionable.

Groom Your Dog Regularly

Regular grooming can help reduce your dog's odor. Brush your dog's coat regularly to remove loose hair and dander. You can also use pet-specific wipes to clean your dog's paws and coat in between baths. Trim their nails and brush their teeth both for your dog's health and to keep smells to a minimum.

Clean Up Accidents Immediately

If your dog has an accident in the house, it's important to clean it up right away. Use paper towels or a cloth to soak up as much of the urine as possible. Do not use baking powder as it is hard on your vacuum. Invest in a carpet/upholstry cleaner that is designed for pets and get the pet odor enzyme cleaner for it. We have a large Bissell carpet cleaner and a smaller portable Bissell carpet cleaner because with multiple dogs in the house we have needed both over the years. Every Bissell purchase goes towards saving homeless pets!

Wash Dog Beds, Bedding, Food & Water Dishes, and Toys

Your dog's bedding and toys can also harbor odors. Wash them regularly in hot water with a pet-specific detergent. You can also add a cup of white vinegar to the wash to help eliminate odors. Hydrogen Peroxide is a color safe bleach so we add it to every load to kill bacteria that causes smells.

Vacuum and Sweep Regularly

Pet hair and dander can also contribute to unpleasant smells in your home. Vacuum and sweep your floors regularly to keep them clean. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to trap allergens and pet hair. Invest in a quality pet vacuum.

Keep Furniture Clean

Cover your sofas with blankets so that you can remove and wash them. If the furniture starts to smell like your dog, cleaning guru Joseph Marini has an easy, nontoxic solution: Keep a spray bottle filled with four parts white vinegar and one part water on hand. “It is great for regularly spraying on carpets and upholstered furniture to tackle tough smells, including urine,” he says. “Of course test any fabric in an inconspicuous spot before applying.”

Cleaning Supplies

Invest in lint rollers, hair removers, and enzymatic cleaners. We regularly use lint rollers to get dog hair off of our sofas and have a rubber hair remover for our vehicles. Folex is a not toxic cleaner that you can spray on and leave after you have treated smelly spots with vinegar and or hydrogen peroxide.

Use Air Purifiers and Dehumidifiers

Air purifiers and dehumidifiers can help keep the air in your home clean and fresh. They can also help reduce moisture, which can contribute to mold growth and musty odors. Clean their air filters and your house's air filters regularly. Open your windows whenever you can to allow frish air into your house.

Use Natural Odor Absorbers & Natural Fragrances

There are several natural odor absorbers you can use in your home, such as activated charcoal, baking soda, and white vinegar. Leave bowls of these substances around your home to absorb odors if you need to. We have bags of activated charcoal in the car next to the dog crates to help absorb odors.

Artificial fragrances can be bad for your dog's health. We like to use a few drops of essential oils in diffuser. Make sure you choose oils that are safe for dogs.

By following these tips, you can minimize dog smells in your home and enjoy a fresh, clean living space.
