7 Tricks Every Boston Terrier Puppy Should Learn

Updated: Mar 20

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time, full of cuddles and playtime. But as your puppy grows, it's important to start training them on basic commands and tricks. Not only will it make your life easier, but it will also help your pup develop their mental and physical abilities. Boston Terriers are known for their intelligence, energy, and loveable personalities.

As a Boston Terrier owner, you have likely discovered just how much joy these little dogs can bring to your life! One way to enhance that joy is by teaching your Boston Terrier some fun and impressive tricks. Puppies have short attention spans so just a few minutes a day is plenty of practice plus you don't want to overfeed your puppy. Consider using lunch or dinner as a way to feed your puppy its kibble instead of just putting the kibble in a dog bowl.

Here are some tricks every Boston Terrier puppy should learn:

  1. Sit: The sit command is the foundation of many other tricks. This is one of the most basic commands, but also one of the most important. Teaching your Boston Terrier to sit on command will make it easier to control them in many situations. Begin by holding a treat above your dog's head and saying "sit" as you move the treat back towards their tail. As their head follows the treat, their bottom should naturally lower to the ground. As soon as they sit, give them the treat and lots of praise.

  2. Stay: Once your pup has mastered sit, move on to the stay command. Have them sit, then step back a few feet and say "stay." Gradually increase the distance and duration of the stay as your pup gets better.

  3. Come: Teaching your pup to come when called is essential for their safety. Start by calling their name and saying "come," then reward them when they reach you.

  4. Shake: This trick is a crowd-pleaser that is sure to impress your friends and family. Begin by having your dog sit. Then, take their paw in your hand and say "shake" as you gently shake their paw up and down. As soon as they lift their paw, give them a treat and lots of praise.

  5. Roll over: Roll over is a fun and impressive trick. This is a more advanced trick, but one that is definitely worth teaching your Boston Terrier. Begin by having your dog lie down. Then, hold a treat in front of their nose and slowly move it towards their shoulder. As they follow the treat, their body should naturally roll over. As soon as they complete the roll, give them the treat and lots of praise.

  6. High five: Similar to shake, high five is a cute and easy trick. Begin by having your dog sit. Then, hold a treat in your hand and raise it slightly above their head. As they reach up to get the treat, say "high five" and gently tap their paw with your hand. As soon as they touch your hand, give them the treat and lots of praise.

  7. Leave it: Leave it is an important command for preventing your pup from eating dangerous or unwanted items. Hold a treat in your closed fist and say "leave it." When your pup stops trying to get the treat, give them a different one and lots of praise.

Teaching your Boston Terrier these tricks can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your dog. Remember to use positive reinforcement, patience, and lots of praise to make the training process enjoyable for your furry friend. Training your puppy on these tricks may take time and patience, but it's worth it. Not only will it strengthen your bond with your pup, but it will also make them a well-behaved and happy member of your family.

Boston Terriers love to please and need mental stimulation so if you want to learn more tricks that you can teach you dog sign up for a local puppy training class and if you have the time your dog would probably love to take different classes offered by the AKC like Agility or Obedience.
